 OK. Pretty , pretty good. It is here that the Beatles' legend (tm) really begins. First, the title. John is not talking about having his wife launder his "smalls". A famous review of this record makes reference to John singing "it takes two to heavy pet". I don't think this is actually a part of this record, but it doubtless was a part of the song before they had to actually record it. "Heavy petting" was, apparently, a process where heterosexual couples in the pre-Beat era indulged in all manner of poking, and, indeed, prodding. Enough of this shite - this single reeks of sex, as much as anything did at that time. The tune, the playing and the singing and harmonies are fantastic. Excitement. Exciting. Still. If the United Kingdom (tm) needed an excuse to fall in love with them, this was it.
